Reported by: Megan Healey Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 @10:18am EDT HARPERS FERRY, WV - A jury has convicted a Harpers Ferry woman in a drunk driving incident where she nearly ran over a police officer with her car, and then resisted arrest.
The main evidence used by prosecutors was police dash-cam video that captured the incident on tape. It happened on February 16th. Harpers Ferry Police Chief Donald Buracker says he was nearly mowed down by an out-of-control driver on Route 340, while he was providing back-up to a fellow officer. Within seconds of the near miss, which was not captured on tape, Buracker took off, trailing the BMW for several miles before the driver, Stacia Lynn Fuller, finally pulled over on Country Club Road. Buracker says Fuller was totally uncooperative, and after several minutes of yelling and cursing, Fuller was still not in handcuffs, and continued to resist. A male friend and her dog remained inside the car, watching the ordeal unfold. When Burracker's back-up arrived a Charles Town police officer tackled Fuller and placed her in handcuffs. After refusing to take a sobriety test, a right guaranteed to all West Virginians, she was placed into a cruiser and arrested. Police later found a beer bottle in the driver's side door. Fuller was found guilty of DUI, fleeing while DUI (a felony), and obstructing an officer. She faces a maximum of 6 and a half years in prison. Sentencing is set for September.
