Reported by: Angela Bohon Saturday, Mar 29, 2008 @03:15pm EDT WILLIAMSPORT, MD - The town of Williamsport is now greener.
About 50 volunteers planted 60 trees and bushes in Byron Memorial Park on Saturday morning. The tree planting is the second phase of a recent effort to make the park greener. Two years ago, more than 200 trees were planted. In addition to local groups giving their time, the project was made possible through a grant, written by Council Member Jeff Cline. It's an effort designed to improve residents' quality of life, among other things. "Increase the urban tree canopy, which provides a number of benefits including shade, visual aesthetics, make it look pretty, wildlife habitat, bring some birds into the park; things along those lines," said Emilie Cooper, Watershed Forester, Maryland Forest Service & Western Maryland Resource Conservation & Development. Volunteers planted various types of trees including oaks, dogwoods, and tulip poplars. |
