NBC NEWS - Everyday garbage has a big impact on the environment.
Besides clogging landfills, moving trash in garbage trucks burns a lot of fuel and emits a lot of greenhouse gas.
Now there’s a creative way to make your next trip to the trashcan a bit more eco-friendly.
Chuck Mumford is empties the trash, but it's not just an ordinary trash can.
Mumford said, "It's solar powered and when the trash gets to a certain level there's an eye that notices that the level is high and it compacts it down."
The Big Belly Solar is described as a trash solution and not just a trash can.
The solar panel on top of the unit powers a compactor to compress trash.
"We emptied everyday, two trash bags, seven days a week. That's 14 bags. We put this in and we change it maybe twice a week, that's two bags," said Mumford.
Lisa Hadaya with Big Belly Solar said, "I see the Big Belly in every major city, in parks, in amusement parks, at beaches."
Hadaya said there are already 1,300 Big Belly solar system trash cans in use across the country.
