  • Final Top 10 Poll (6-10)
    Reported by: Karen Loftus

    Saturday, Dec 15, 2007 @10:42pm EST

The number 10 team is Frederick.  The Cadets got off to a strong start in 2007 going undefeated until they had to forfeit their first win over Tuscarora after playing an ineligible athlete. With that forfeit, Frederick finished the season 8-2, losing only to Thomas Johnson in their final game of the season. With only one loss on the field, Coach Vince Ahearn and the Cadets were one point short of making the playoffs.

In at number 9 is Martinsburg. The Bulldogs, another team plagued by controversial forfeited wins, finished the season 7-4.  Without their first two wins overturned, Martinsburg would have finished 9-2, with much better seeding in the post-season. A turbulent regular season was punctuated by an incredible upset loss to Jefferson that dropped them for the first time this season from their top spot in our poll to number 6. They followed-up that loss the next week with a loss to Bridgeport in the first round of the state playoffs.  Despite the early exit, the Bulldogs did post seven wins and averaged more than 35 points in their victories.

Our number 8 team is Smithsburg. The 1A stand-out started the season as our number 10 team and was ranked as high as number 4. The Leopards went undefeated until their final game of the regular season when they met their match in a strong Boonsboro team. The following week coach Buddy Orndorff squared-off with his alma mater, Fort Hill, in the first round of the Maryland playoffs and suffered a shut-out loss to end their season at 9-2.

Onto number 7 and the Linganore Lancers, ranked as high as number 3 by going undefeated until week 10.   The Chesapeake conference champs were led all season by the dynamic duo of Alex Phelps and C.J. Thomas. Linganore was finally stunned by a struggling Urbana team in their last regular season game. Linganore was dealt their season-ending blow with a loss to Thomas Johnson in the first round of the playoffs.  Coach Rick Conner led the Lancers to a final mark of 9-2.

The number 6 team is Millbrook, one of the biggest surprises in the four-state region. The Pioneers went down in the books as the best team in school history behind the area's leading rusher, Butch Kazmarzewsky.  Coach Reed Prosser's crew wrecked-house in the Northwestern League, shutting out Handley and almost upsetting Sherando for the district title. Millbrook finished the season at 8-2, the most wins in school history and qualified for the playoffs. Their remarkable season ended by the hands of Monticello in the second round.
