  • WV Woman Gets "Poor" Call From Hillary Campaign
    Reported by: Pieter Bickford

    Wednesday, May 14, 2008 @09:18am EDT

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Hillary Clinton campaign is apologizing to a Shepherdstown woman after a campaign volunteer was captured on tape saying "West Virginians are poor."

Julie Corvo says the volunteer accidentally left the message on her answering machine after playing a taped message from Sen. Clinton.

"Hi. Hello? This is crazy," the volunteer said.  "This person hung up. Maybe they think it's a bill collector. I bet it is. West Virginians are poor."

Corvo, a teacher in Harpers Ferry, says she was tired of getting so many campaign calls, but she couldn't believe her ears when she heard the latest one.  She says she is a "fifth generation" West Virginian who is not poor.

"I don't have bill collectors calling me. I resent the stereotype. I'm very tired of it," Corvo said.

She phoned the Hillary Clinton campaign in West Virginia, who had someone call her from the campaign's national office.  They apologized for the message.

"You can't control what everyone says and does," Clinton spokesman Isaac Baker told NBC25. "Sometimes because they're affiliated with the campaign, they do things that are really hurtful to others and to the campaign. All we can do is apologize and do our best to make sure that's not happening to anyone going forward."

Corvo says she is a Hillary Clinton supporter. She blames the whole thing on a badly trained volunteer. And she's hoping, now that the election is over, the phone calls will stop.
